Hydrofoil Anyone? (B.A.R. rating 4 out of 5)
I’m just not good at the whole water skiing gig. Something about getting dragged behind a boat on some plastic or fiberglass floatsam, just doesn’t seem to coordinate very well for me. I have tried a couple of times, and if you consider that I stood for probably a total for 4 minutes, I just don’t think it’s me. Give me some jetskis and let me tear something up.
That being said, I do recognize that there are many out there that love nothing more than just wake and spin around a lake for hours doing flips. Well, they’ve taken it to a new artform (Foil Freaks).
Apparently somewhere in the 60’s, 70’s a couple of guys, Mike Murphy and Bob Woolley decided to add a type of foil to the bottom of skiis and knee boards. Sometime into the mid 80’s they thought wouldn’t it be cool to add one of these things to bottom of something you can sit on? And the rest is pretty much history.
Now there are world championships and people tearing things up (or themselves) with this stuff. Would I do it? Probably not. But I have respect for those that do.
This HAS to be scary, and earns defintely a respectable 4 out of 5 B.A.R.s

Climb Via Ferrata at Nelson Rock (B.A.R. rating 4 out of 5)
Via Ferrata at the Nelson Rock Preserve is a must see trail for any formative BA. Taking on Via Ferrata, a system of cables and rungs, that at first glance would seem like a beginners course in rock climbing. Perhaps excellent free climber might consider this a walk in the park, but a decent rock climber will have a healthy respect for this obstacle course.
No seriously, it’s definitely kind of scary. Who would have thought that climbing a simple system of rungs could be so freaky. In fact, we risked life and limb to bring some of the excellent photos of just how BA this thing is. I hope you can appreciate just how much we risk to bring, you, the reader, an accurate portrayl of how just how crazy this thing is.

Samsung i500 Is it a PDA? Is it a Phone? Is it my life? (B.A.R. rating 3 out of 5)
When I put this site together, I thought that part of the goal for any aspiring bad ass was to find those must have things in life: love, liberty, and cool stuff. In the spirit of this pursuit, I present to you a pretty remarkable piece of technology that I have come to love (and detest) for variety of reasons.
The single best quality of this phone is that it marries a phone with the full blow Palm OS 4.1 Palm’s latest and greatest OS is up to 5 and soon around the corner probably 6. But Palm 4 still continues to be the dominant OS of the PDA market (I could be wrong on this, but I don’t think Windows CE is quite there yet, and Blackberry is well.. that’s another story). Essentially, this PDA allows you download and install from a collection of thousands of software titles. Check out Palm Gear). If you ever wonder if there is something you wish you could use to track, organize, reference, play with, learn from, at a bus stop on cold winter day, you can be assured someone’s already thought of it and made it available at Palm Gear.
“My Treo 600 also does that, what’s the big deal?”
What Treo users, and essentially all other PDA/Phone users can’t do, is look good using their PDA’s. “Form factor” is the term given to a device’s design, and how much space it takes to be a functional piece of equipment. The Samsung i500 has the single best form factor of all other PhonePDA’s. Most of the PhonePDA’s on the market look like heavy soap bars, some of them like the Treo’s have a tiny keyboards mashed in, with badly beveled buttons that require some getting use to.

Where’s the best carnival party in the world? Bahia (B.A.R. rating 4 out of 5)
If you said New Orleans or Rio, you came close enough. But without question, the nuttiest place to party for carnival, is Bahia Brazil.
The party is overwhelming and relentless. Into day 3 of the festivities and I had to stay inside and recoop. Plan to arrive early, plan on dancing in the streets, and plan on massive hangover after it’s all said and done.
A solid 4 out of 5 B.A.R.s

Throw a Crab & Cicada Party (B.A.R. rating 2 out of 5)
Cicadas only come around 14 or 17 years and so this year, we happen to throw a Crab and Cicada party for them. Since no one actually ate a Cicada, our B.A.R. rating slipped a bit. Good times, good times. Too bad we have to wait another decade and half to throw the next one.
Throw a Crab & Cicada Party is an easy rating 2 out of 5 B.A.R.s
